Hoppegarten

Horse races have been held at Hoppegarten, just east of Berlin, since 1868. It was an important centre for European racing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, attracting up to 40,000 spectators from all walks of life.

Recently, however, it has struggled with low attendances; racing is not a popular past-time in Berlin. Neglect during the GDR period and uncertainty about ownership since reunification mean the facilities have suffered.

Still, the racing association Rennverein Hoppegarten operated the track during the 2007 season, attracting first-timers, families and committed punters alike.
